Have the Best Day Ever with this 10 Step Morning Routine

Mornings are hard buuut I have a little something that makes my mornings (and my days) better, and hopefully it will help you too. I developed this routine after thoroughly doing my research and looking through tons of posts on Pinterest (as I often do) to collect my favorite ideas. (I’ll also be sharing my night routine soon!) I’ve been trying to do this every day for the past couple of weeks and it really does make a difference in my overall happiness and productivity. To do the first 8 steps it only takes about 15 minutes, so you barely have to get up earlier to fit it in! The last 2 steps vary based on how much time you have. Obviously I’d love to leisurely make breakfast and do my makeup, but sometimes I spend all of that time hitting snooze and trying to avoid responsibility. This morning routine helps me to start my day on a high note and take on whatever challenges I have to face. Try it and let me know what you think!

  1. Meditate
    • I feel like everyone is talking about meditation right now and there are so many studies that boast of its benefits. I use the Meditation app (which I mentioned in The Best iPhone Apps) to do 2-5 minutes of meditation every day. That doesn’t seem very long but it really does help me feel more calm and centered. I usually do this while I’m still laying down (a little something I learned from my favorite podcast, The Lively Show) so that way I still get a few extra minutes in bed before I have to get up.
  2. Visualize
    • Visualization is key, and I take just a minute after meditating to think about how I want my day to be. I think about what I’m going to do, my goals, and what I want to accomplish, but I also think about how I want to feel throughout the day and then I cultivate those feelings.
  3. Practice gratitude
    • I also mentioned this app in my post The Best iPhone Apps and I absolutely love it. I use The Five Minute Journal app every morning and night and you wouldn’t believe how much of an impact naming just 3 things you’re grateful for daily has on your attitude. You could do this in your head too, or there’s also a physical journal you can buy here. I highly recommend this practice to everyone, especially if you struggle to be positive like I do sometimes 🙂
  4. Open the blinds
    • Sunshine is a great motivator so as soon as I get out of bed I open my blinds to enjoy the light and tell my body it’s time to wake up.
  5. Make the bed
    • For one thing, making my bed after I get up encourages me to not lay back down it and sleep some more. Secondly, I always think of this speech by Admiral McRaven. I heard it last year and for some reason it’s stuck with me. He said, “If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day… And, if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made- that you made- and a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better.” So I always remember, if I have a bad day at least I’ll come home to a nicely made bed.
  6. Stretch
    • Ideally I would do a full workout in the morning but I’m too much of a night owl to wake up that early, so I start off my day with a little bit of yoga and stretching to get some movement in.
  7. Take vitamins
    • If I don’t take my vitamins in the morning I know I’ll probably forget, so I do this right after brushing my teeth. Every day I take a multivitamin, fish oil, a probiotic, vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium. #healthy
  8. Drink lemon water
    • You’ve probably heard of this one too, but lemon water has so many detoxifying benefits. I either drink lemon water or at least a full water bottle to start my day (and then I drink a full gallon of water throughout the day because I am very well hydrated).
  9. Eat breakfast
    • Eating breakfast always helps start the day on the right foot, and I know I’ll make better food choices throughout the day if I’m not starving in the morning. I’m guilty of just grabbing coffee and an RxBar most days (at least it’s something) but I love a good avocado toast or berries with peanut butter when I have time to make it. I made the BEST toast this morning so I’ll be sharing that recipe soon 😉
  10. Seize the day
    • Now it’s time to get dressed, do my hair and makeup, and have an amazing day!

  1. Great tips! I did get into the habit of meditating a while ago, but I’ve been so busy recently that I’ve stopped! I should definitely start again, it’s such a great way to start the day

  2. Great post! I loved reading it! Meditation is something I have never tried as I always think it has to take an hour, but now that I know you can do it for only a few minutes and whilst still lying down (mega bonus) then I am definitely going to give it a try! Xx
